May Books I Want

Nath and I used to do post monthly new releases at our joint blog, Breezing Through. Those were the good old days. Those posts really kept me up to date on new releases and Nath always brought a few books to my attention that I might have overlooked. So I thought in a throwback to those days, I’d post a few books I’m looking forward to this month.

weddinggirlWedding Girl by Stacey Ballis

Top pastry chef Sophie Bernstein and her sommelier fiancé were set to have Chicago’s culinary wedding of the year…until the groom eloped with someone else in a very public debacle, leaving Sophie splashed across the tabloids—fifty grand in debt on her dream wedding and one-hundred percent screwed on her dream life. The icing on the cake was when she lost her job and her home…

Laying low, Sophie moves in with her grandmother, Bubbles. That way, she can keep Bubbles and her sweater-wearing pug company and nurse her broken heart. But when Sophie gets a part-time job at the old-fashioned neighborhood bakery, she finds herself up to her elbows in dough and reluctantly giving a wedding cake customer advice on everything from gift bags to guest accommodations. Before she knows it, she’s an online wedding planner. It’s not mousse and macarons, but it pays the bills. But with the arrival of unexpected personal and professional twists, Sophie wonders if she’s really moving forward—or starting over from scratch…

I really enjoy Stacey’s writing. It’s more women’s fiction than romance but her characters are so endearing and real. Plus the dogs on the covers. They typically match the dog in the story! LOL

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matsonunexpectthing

Andie had it all planned out.

When you are a politician’s daughter who’s pretty much raised yourself, you learn everything can be planned or spun, or both. Especially your future.

Important internship? Check.

Amazing friends? Check.

Guys? Check (as long as we’re talking no more than three weeks)

But that was before the scandal. Before having to be in the same house with her dad. Before walking an insane number of dogs. That was before Clark and those few months that might change her whole life.

Because here’s the thing – if everything’s planned out, you can never find the unexpected.

And where’s the fun in that?

I’ve had my ups and downs with Matson but definitely more ups and the downs weren’t that bad so I’m hoping she has another winner on her hands with this one. I haven’t been reading a lot of YA over the last couple of years (New Adult has been filling that hole in my heart) but there are still some YA authors I continue to buy and Matson is one of them.

p.s. Dogs on the cover!

skhSmut by Karina Halle

What happens when the kink between the pages leads to heat between the sheets?

All Blake Crawford wants is to pass his creative writing course, get his university degree and take over his dad’s ailing family business. What Amanda Newland wants is to graduate at the top of her class, as well as finally finish her novel and prove to her family that writing is a respectful career.

What Blake and Amanda don’t want is to be paired up with each other for their final project but that’s exactly what they both get when they’re forced to collaborate on a writing piece. Since Amanda thinks Blake is a pushy asshole (with a panty-melting smirk and British accent) and Blake thinks Amanda has a stick up her ass (though it’s brilliant ass), they fight tooth and nail until they discover they write well together. They also might find each other really attractive, but that’s neither here nor there.

When their writing project turns out to be a success, the two of them decide to start up a secret partnership together using a pen name, infiltrating the self-publishing market in the lucrative genre of erotica. Naturally, with so much heat and passion between the pages, it’s not long before their dirty words become a dirty reality. Sure, they still fight a lot but at least there’s make-up sex now.

But even as they start to fall hard for each other, will their burgeoning relationship survive if their scandalous secret is exposed or are happily-ever-afters just a work of fiction?

Karina is an auto-buy author for me. She has a nice backlist that I’m slowly making my way through so I never run out of her books to read. I like her writing style, her characters and their chemistry is always off the charts.

Good Girl by Lauren Layneggll

Jenny Dawson moved to Nashville to write music, not get famous. But when her latest record goes double platinum, Jenny’s suddenly one of the town’s biggest stars—and the center of a tabloid scandal connecting her with a pop star she’s barely even met. With paparazzi tracking her every move, Jenny flees to a remote mansion in Louisiana to write her next album. The only hiccup is the unexpected presence of a brooding young caretaker named Noah, whose foul mouth and snap judgments lead to constant bickering—and serious heat.

Noah really should tell Jenny that he’s Preston Noah Maxwell Walcott, the owner of the estate where the feisty country singer has made her spoiled self at home. But the charade gives Noah a much-needed break from his own troubles, and before long, their verbal sparring is indistinguishable from foreplay. But as sizzling nights give way to quiet pillow talk, Noah begins to realize that Jenny’s almost as complicated as he is. To fit into each other’s lives, they’ll need the courage to face their problems together—before the outside world catches up to them.

Lauren Layne is another auto-buy author. And I’ve been reading about musicians lately. Which isn’t a bad thing because there’s enough difference that I don’t feel like I’m re-reading the same thing twice.

Too Hot to Handle by Tessa Baileyththtb

When Rita Clarkson’s Suburban takes its last breath on a New Mexico roadside, rescue roars up on a Harley in the form of smooth-talking honkey tonk owner, Jasper Ellis, a man as mysterious as he is charming. Rita’s cross-country journey to New York City–with her three estranged siblings in tow–is only beginning, but now that Jasper has found Rita, his plans do not include her leaving.

I really enjoy Tessa’s writing and I always look forward to her latest release. Plus I like motorcycle riding heroes.

Grin and Beard It by Penny Reidgbipr

Sienna Diaz is everyone’s favorite “fat” funny lady. The movie studio executives can’t explain it, but her films are out-grossing all the fit and trim headliners and Hollywood’s most beautiful elite. The simple truth is, everyone loves plus-sized Sienna.

But she has a problem, she can’t read maps and her sense of direction is almost as bad as her comedic timing is stellar. Therefore, when Sienna’s latest starring role takes her to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park she finds herself continually lost while trying to navigate the backroads of Green Valley, Tennessee. Much to her consternation, Sienna’s most frequent savior is a ridiculously handsome, charming, and cheeky Park Ranger by the name of Jethro Winston.

Sienna is accustomed to high levels of man-handsome, so it’s not Jethro’s chiseled features or his perfect physique that make Sienna stutter. It’s his southern charm. And gentlemanly manners. And habit of looking at her too long and too often.

Sienna has successfully navigated the labyrinth of Hollywood heart-throbs. But can she traverse the tenuous trails of Tennessee without losing her head? Or worse, her heart?

I only started reading Penny Reid last summer when Rosie recommended her when we met up at RWA last year. I’m so glad I listened to her. I’ve enjoyed every Reid book I’ve read to date.

simsmSleepless in Manhattan by Sarah Morgan

Cool, calm and competent, events planner Paige Walker loves a challenge. After a childhood spent in and out of hospitals, she’s now determined to prove herself—and where better to take the world by storm than in the exhilarating bustle of Manhattan? But when Paige is let go from the job she loves, she must face her biggest challenge of all—going it alone.

Except launching her own events company is nothing compared to hiding her outrageous crush on Jake Romano—her brother’s best friend, New York’s most in-demand date, and the only man to break her heart. When Jake offers Paige’s fledgling company a big chance, their still-sizzling chemistry starts giving her sleepless nights. But can she convince the man who trusts no one to take a chance on forever?

I really enjoy Sarah’s writing and falling for a sibling’s best friend is plot catnip for me! I’ve got this one to review for Book Binge so I should hurry up and read it.
Marrying Winterborne by Lisa Kleypasmwlk

A ruthless tycoon
Savage ambition has brought common-born Rhys Winterborne vast wealth and success. In business and beyond, Rhys gets exactly what he wants. And from the moment he meets the shy, aristocratic Lady Helen Ravenel, he is determined to possess her. If he must take her virtue to ensure she marries him, so much the better…

A sheltered beauty
Helen has had little contact with the glittering, cynical world of London society. Yet Rhys’s determined seduction awakens an intense mutual passion. Helen’s gentle upbringing belies a stubborn conviction that only she can tame her unruly husband. As Rhys’s enemies conspire against them, Helen must trust him with her darkest secret. The risks are unthinkable…the reward, a lifetime of incomparable bliss. And it all begins with…

Marrying Mr. Winterborne

This is the only historical I have in this post. I don’t want to say I’m over that genre because I read at least one a month, but I’m not taking chances on new authors. I’m mostly just buying auto-buy authors. That being said, Lisa is Lisa and she’s an auto-buy author. This one sounds good too. I like the idea of a shy heroine with a backbone of steel.

So those are just a few of the books I’m looking forward to this month. What about you?

So I read somewhere yesterday that Penny Reid announced the release date for Grin and Beard It has been pushed back indefinitely, there was a lot of drama with the saving and her losing the final draft and some other stuff that I don’t think we’re getting it this month. She was on my list because I know you liked her.

I think you’ll enjoy the Morgan Matson, it was good but not my favorite but the main character is a dog walker! I totally thought of you while I was reading that one.

I hadn’t read the blurb for the Karina Halle book until right now and that one looks good. But I don’t read much by her so I’ll wait until you tell me you like it or not before buying it.

Thanks for the list boo! I miss your monthly round up of releases from Breezing Through.

That makes me so sad! And I feel so bad for Penny losing her book like that! Thanks for letting me know Wena!

I think you’d love Karina’s heroes. Her writing reminds me of Samantha Young’s..

I missed those posts, Ames! If only they could write themselves, it’d be awesome LOL.

You weren’t kidding, there are a lot of books in May for you. My list is pretty pathetic.

Didn’t realize there was a new Stacey Ballis! Definitively will check it out 🙂 There are a lot of dogs in The Unexpected Everything. Should tip the scale in the “like” column for you with this book 🙂 The Lauren Layne actually sounds good. she has too many books out, it’s hard to keep track. And is Karina Halle the same author who was in the middle of a kerfuffle about an author behaving badly or am I mistaking her with someone else? It actually sounds pretty good.

I like the covers of Sarah Morgan’s new trilogy.

I think you’re mistaking KH with someone else. I haven’t heard about any kerfuffles.

In regards to Lauren Layne, that’s what Goodreads is for! LOL But I know what you mean.

Of your list it’s the Sarah Morgan (although I’m crazy stupid behind on her books) and Lisa Kleypas for me. I really adored the Kleypas couple when they were first introduced in Cold-Hearted Rake, so I’m looking forward to that book just as soon as my reading mood swings around that way…

I MISS those posts at Breezing Through! I always went there during the month to look for books to buy. 🙂

From this bunch, I’m thinking the Sarah Morgan. Sadly, I’m not sure about the book by Lisa Kleypas! I DNF’d the first book of her new historical romance series (unheard of, right?).

I didn’t DNF the first Kleypas but…I think I graded it C+. I read it in 2 sittings (a rare feat for me right now) and I appreciated the writing (it read like the author, the editor, Avon in general took their time on this one – which I appreciated), but I quickly got bored with the main couple and wanted ALL Helen and Rhys ALL the time (the couple in Marrying Winterborne).

Also, I suspect this will be a series where I don’t read all the books. I’m intrigued by the hero’s cousin from Cold-Hearted Rake but there was also a set of mischievous twin girls and….meh. Unless something changes in their character development along the way I’ll probably skip the twins’ books.

Wendy – I heard that the second book (Marrying Winterborne) was better than the first book. I still haven’t read the first book but will…eventually.
