I like to look back at my reading year and since I’m a bit of a nerd, I have to share with the world. haha
I read a total of 124 books in 2016. Here’s a nice chart that shows how that broke down per month.
Now this is low for me. 2016 really was a bad year in general. And honestly, what happened in the fall? I had a vacation in July so I can understand why there’d be a bump there but then things just plunge. Only six books in October?
Since 124 books for the year is low for me, I thought I’d look back at previous years to see how they compare. Again, 2016 was not good.
This makes me sad. I know there’s something going on with me mentally when my reading suffers. And I did have 2 big losses in 2013. In 2014 my job changed in a big way and things got really stressful in January of this year in regards to work. So I’m going to blame work. I also started painting but it isn’t something I do a lot of so I can’t blame new hobbies either.
Whatever the cause, let’s hope 2017 is better!
Moving on, here are the GENRES I read in 2016:
Contemporary Romance – 72
New Adult – 15
Fantasy – 8
Contemp YA – 7
Historical Romance – 4
M/M – 4
PNR – 4
Mystery – 2
Romantic Suspense – 2
General Fiction – 2
Historical Fiction – 2
Non-Fiction – 2
In 2015, I read 77 contemporary romances. So I’m still loving that genre. I did read less historical romances compared to 2015 (13). I read the same amount of m/m. Again, I need to make that a goal for 2017. Nothing else was a surprise.
Formats:
E-Book – 95
Print – 11
Library Print – 13
Library E-Book – 5
Nothing surprising here either. I love reading in e-format. I did want to read more print books (especially from my tbr pile) so that will be a goal for 2017. In fact, I’m reading a print book right now!
And finally, here are the GRADES I doled out for 2016:
A – 11 (7 A-‘s, 4 A’s and only 1 A- was a re-read)
B – 79 (38 B+’s, 31 B’s, 10 B-‘s)
C – 29 (10 C+’s, 19 C’s)
D – 3
* didn’t grade the 2 non-fiction titles I read
I think I’m getting stingy with A’s. As I get older and disillusioned, I need more to engage me. LOL But it wasn’t a horrible reading year quality wise. I’m not complaining about 38 B+ reads. That’s pretty good. However, this is the second year in a row where I did not have an A+ read.
Some other random things about the books I read:
- 73 were published in 2016 – this means I’m reading more new releases compared to past years
- 55 books were self-published – this comes out to 44% of the books I read
- 9 re-reads counted – in 2015 I had 20 re-reads. I know the cause for this, I read an awesome book in June and for the rest of the year I would re-read this book constantly, and I never counted all those re-reads, but it would be a LOT! Also…this book will be revealed in my next post!
- I reviewed 8 books this year – it will be a goal of 2017 to review more on the blog
Ok, that’s it for my 2016 numbers. Nothing surprising but I didn’t read as much as I would have liked.
How was your 2016?
2016 was a crappy year for me, too. I still haven’t done a wrap up post because I am not even sure I want to talk about it. lol Hope 2017 is a good reading year for you!

Hey Ames!!
pretty nice post 🙂 Maybe we’re mentally exhausted by the end of the year? I know my end of the year was weak too… I think by then, we’re tired of having to find a book to read and just do other stuff. Plus, i bet if you counted your re-reads of Kulti, those numbers would be up LOL.
I feel the past few years just have not been good books years. Hopefully, 2017 will be different.
72 contemporary romance books? yowzer!! That’s a lot. I mean, I read a lot of contemporary romance too, but don’t get near there. Then again, I like urban fantasy a lot, so perhaps that’s what makes the difference.
11 As? I’m looking forward to see what they were 🙂

You definitely read other genres, especially fantasy. I’ve just really narrowed down my scope in the last year.
